Gang,
My long time ski bud (and guy who taught me to ski not so long ago) and I are planning our yearly trip, and I think this year we will pull the trigger on Telluride and Silverton. Any thoughts on this destination? What do I need to know, and who has done either or both?
On paper, Telluride has been one of the BIG THREE places I haven't been yet (along with Mammoth and Big Sky) and probably the one I have thought about most. Questions:
1. Any advice or line on cheaper tickets; the daily fee is high at Telluride and it's hard to find good deals (telluride is pricey every which way!). Are there any deals locally or nationally to sniff out for this place?
2. Anyone skied the copious off piste terrain they've made more accessible over the last few years? It looks great.
3. I am assuming March 15-22 is prime time to Visit, am I right?
As for Silverton, anyone done the guided day(s) trip want to share their experience??
I'm thinking 2 days telluride, 2 days silverton, and one day back in telluride.
Thanks!

SBM I am guessing from the resounding silence that not many here have been to those ski areas. Silverton intimidates me, from what I have read. Sounds like a real experts mountain. Survival skiing for my level and lesser willingness to take chances. (no Jim, that doesn't mean I'm stopping my "exploratory" mountain ventures, sorry ) Telluride is on the list. Harder to get to, expensive and a harder mountain to ski. Your job, which you have no choice but to take: full trip report. Daily reports are preferable, so we can experience the nuances. Seriously, sounds like a great trip and we would all enjoy hearing about two areas that are off the beaten track for most northeasterners. Lynn

I would post up on Epic for input. I have not skied either but would love to ski Silverton. It is an experts only mountain and from what I do know, its a huge playground. As long as you are comfortable on steeps, can ski in all conditions, and have some "mountain" skills you would be fine if you are skiing double blacks with confidence. There are areas where the difficulty level varies meaning you don't need to be Davenport or Coombs to ski there. T-ride looks to be another awesome place and town too. Creste Butte should be on that list as well. You could also just come up to Steamboat and ski some fantastic snow. I would be happy to show you around.

Liam,
Never been to southern Co. to ski, but, I like the selections you are thinking about, especially if they are in your bucket list. My sense is you like "the road less traveled" so just go for it. Not the easy to get to and it should be a little pricey as they have no local competition. Someday, I like to join up with Ron at the 'boat for all that it offers in champagne snow, but, for the type of skiing you seek, Telluride should rule.
And, as Lynn writes, keep us informed!

Yeah, We originally planned on going to Washington State and putting together a Crystal, Stevens Pass, Baker trip (which, could still happen), but we started thinking about Silverton-Teluride (especially since Colorado has been snowier). And, we always keep Salt Lake City as a fall back, but I've been there four times already. We'll make final plans in two weeks, as we see where the snow starts to pick up. But the idea was, if we don't try Silverton this year, when will I? I'm not getting younger, and Telluride looms large as a must see and ski IMHO. LP, you are right, I do love the lesser traveled places, and I am always thinking about the best 'second-third tier' ski resort. I had a great trip to schweitzer, whitewater and Red a few years ago (actually, like 6 years ago now) and thought they were all great in that lesser traveled capacity. Which is why Crystal/ Stevens and Baker are all still on the list. I have some ski buddies who have been to Silverton and loved it. Ron, how is Steamboat in Mid/late March?? That is a place I'd like to take my family while the kids are on break (or myself) I have skied Summit County, but never Steamboat or Loveland or Winter park (I have skied Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper, Breck and A-Basin…wasn't my favorite ski trip, though). Crested Butte, yeah that'd be cool, but I doubt I could fit that in a week trip that included telluride and Silverton. I'll post a trip report regardless of where we go, videos, too. Man, I could go for some real snow….

Colorado in march is typically very good! Hard to ever predict though. Right now, Steamboat has the best snow in the country and more is coming in.

SWEET! will be a the boat March 7 - 14.
BTW - locals call Telluride - "to hell you ride" - the drive in during the winter can be interesting. Supposed to be an awesome mountain - on my bucket list!
