The way I think about ski length is that I go longer if I need more stability, shorter to be more maneuvarable. (Big generalization but accurate) The Kastle MX line are very stable skis and can be skied shorter and get away with it as far as their stability. I skied the MX88 at 176 which is short for me - 6'2" 195lb esp for a twin tip. Absolutely never noticed. It still may have been the most stable ski I have ever been on.
Gary - do you get any hint of instability when you race Joe to the bottom?

Hey Perry, Happy New Year...
I echo your thoughts exactly especially with the Kastle Mx Series. So funny you asked about my skiing with Joe. Just Friday we were skiing together and he started right on my tails and I could hear him shouting come on Dad "get er moving"....Well I opened up the MX83's and was waiting down the mountain for him.
I said "where were you"? He was laughing saying "you had rockets coming out your ass"....Ya I said..".and I had to check my underwear for brown spots!"
I know the skis at the 163 length do have an upper end speed limit where the 173 length would give me more stability at those insane speeds....but it's always give and take. I truly find no short comings with the MX83 in the 163 length for me. Pretty much all I've been happily skiing since our mountain opened up.
Now I'm just trying to figure out how to transport 3 pairs of skis for my outwest trips...heehee!
Best. G

I've not quite figured Gary's skiing style out. When we first met in Jackson, maybe 8 years ago, he was skiing with one arm in a sling, and making these high speed GS turns on the groomers. Nobody kept up with him, except possibly Alice. I jokingly told her that a suitable internet name would be "fastlady" because she tried so hard to keep up with him. He had a PMTS.org patch on his jacket and was more into Harb style skiing. Over the ensuing years, I found him to be more focused on turning and playing with various ski styles. Perhaps "playful" is an apt term as he just wants to have fun. While he is still somewhat fast, it's more an efficient style, rather than a bomber. Many times, I've followed him down trails, with both of us just making nice short radius turns at moderate pace. Now skiing with his son Joe, I've found Joe to go downhill in a hurry, so, if G can keep ahead of Joe, then he still has some jets that can be tapped into for extra speed.
If one wants to see him disappear real quick, just try following him on a powder day! See him on the first ride up, then next at lunch time. He never looks back. G, looking forward to the international ski trip in a few weeks, it will be great to make turns again, regardless of your pace and style.

Hey Mike...thank you for the kind words...Speed and gravity are SO cool. I would like to think my skiing has matured to a more playful level with a smidgen of speed tossed in just to shake off the cob webs. I also think that my ski skills improved through the years so I have better speed management skills...But that kid in heart still loves to jump and drift them out along banked edges. Kinda where my fun factor meter pins itself.
Now skiing eastern powder...light and fluffy...you must admit Mike..it's like winning the lottery. Yes...I admit I lose all mental faculties....( not hard for my small brain). 90% of the brain shuts down...I remember nothing and the little ski brain takes over totally. That's my excuse and I"m sticking with it!
Now Greg, this man is insanely fast and so controlled....a true jet pilot on the snow. I know that's what pins his fun meter! He puts SO much energy into his skis they look like lo mein noddles moving side to side. Purrty thing to watch but look quick!
For me....My license plate reads "Skicarvr"...not because I'm the best carving maniac on the snow...it's just I love the feeling of arcing the skis, the control, .....THE DANCE!
Looking forward to skiing with "the boys" at HM!

Aren't lo mein noodles fat? I don't ski on fat skis. ;-)

Almost forgot... Gary: 190, 188, or the girly 183? Also have a 206 SG I could mount up.

Greg you are another level above my "speed grade"....wicked fast and solid...just live with that! LOL!
OK...I'm sure the 190 and 188 will KMA....I may have a shot with the 183's....if you're sentencing me to total destruction...set up the 206's...heehee!
Gonna be another fine get together I'm SURE!

Perhaps I'll throw plates and bindings on the 183's... Strangely they are the same length as a pair of 185's I had... Either Austrians or Italians cannot measure.
