And I for one was appreciative of LP's timely warning. And glad Jim did not drive when not at his most alert. Yes, last years accident returning from a day of skiing is still pretty fresh, as Jim knows from my hand grabs on the window grip at any turn in snowy conditions. Jim was sorry to miss this outing, but a white knuckle drive in blizzard conditions for a minimum of 7 hours and most likely more, just didn't seem wise. SBM, glad you live closer to your mountain. Many of us have long drives for skiing. Your home mountain is getting some great snow this year. One day we hope to get there. My schedule limits our weekend skiing. Let it keep snowing. A great northeast year!

AND, Jim had all the appropriate libations to bring with him! He's a newbie to the world of alcohol, but was prepped with contributions to GISO. Maybe next year. Magic Hat 9 anyone??

The ride to Hollimount from Philly or NY is not one to be tried in bad weather. Maybe 5 years ago, I did that drive to meet Gary there very late in the spring. It was the year of my shoulder dislocation and I wanted a few more days. From Philly it's close to 400 miles, but, the real issue is the road, Highway 17 that runs east-west in southern NY. It's an old time "super" highway, with many twists, turns, climbs and descents. I drove it in the rain....not fun. If Jim takes the northern route via the NY Throughway, it's over 400 miles from NY to Buffalo, then another 50 down to Hollimount. Jim made the right call, even if he did miss a great eastern powder day.
This year, I drove to Gary's during snow showers, with cross winds blowing snow onto the highways. I was damn glad to see his home.
The ride is best done in 2 phases, get to Gary's, ski Bristol for a day, then head to Hollimount. Alice is a marvelous hostess.

Safety is paromount over risk...next..fly to Rochester...let me do the driving!!!!! All the best, g Gary: I considered that, but was concerned that your 11 pair of skis might crowd me out, and that if you fell in love with another pair at the mountain I might be stranded at said mountain. Mike: Thanks for that assessment. I was feeling like a wuss, especially after the 'old guy' said to leave the driving to him. :-)

Oh, I get it, you meant because of the drive. I guess that makes sense…though still, it's hard to get a powder day if you don't drive in the snow. . Also, even if it snows 15 inches instead of 8, the effect on the drive is the same, it's going to snow the same amount when you drive (with either more or less before and after you drive).
