I just received a Kinetic bike trainer and would like to set up my 29er onto this rig. I've heard that I will need a super-strong special tire, as any regular tire will just self destruct. Is this true? I was hoping to just take an old worn out mtn. bike tire, give it a shave and a haircut to get the lugs off, and get pedaling. So...what's the scoop? Knowing there are a few here who use trainers, I curious to know what you all use.
Cheers, and thanks!

Hmmm. I don't use a trainer, but I would never have thought that a tire running on a trainer would be more likely to disintegrate than that same tire riding on a gravelly road or a rocky trail That is a pretty non-intuitive piece of information.
What about a 29'er city bike tire, one with smoother, lugless tread?

Yeah, that's what I would have thought, but then I read about people using trainers and shredding their tires in short order. Maybe they were using skinny, soft road tires(?). Years ago I used a Mag Minoura trainer with an old road bike, and just used a cheapo road tire with no issues.
Unless someone has experience and advises me otherwise, I think I'll try shaving a worn out Slant Six, which has little tread left in the center anyway. Hopefully it won't fill my basement with little rubber bits.
Looking forward to getting this thing into service.

I think most trainers use road tires (or extra hard road tires since cornering traction isn't an issue). I would imagine the other issue will be vibration, since the roller is smooth and hard and won't give much as the remaining lugs travel over it. Hope the Slant 6's are worn completely smooth in the middle. Higher tire pressures than trail riding? Sweat cover for the bike since you won't have the riding breeze to keep you cool (but that's OK, I've heard Vikings are pretty cool all the time).

That's because we keep the thermostat just above freezing and leave the windows open all winter to let the arctic blasts in. Ahhh, the comforts of home....bliss. From what I've read, it's the heat generated which kills the tires. Perhaps the roller is what gets hot? I guess I'll soon find out... And yes, much higher pressures than trail riding. Max for the tire model I'm guessing is best.

Svend, I have the same trainer. I actually put cheaper tires on my bike because I don't want to ware down my good one. You do want a smooth tread if you can get it I would think. This may be the issue with a mountain bike. My advice, buy a cheap tire with a smooth tread, no worries! Perry Dude - USA hockey is looking pretty good. I am a little surprised.

Perfect! And it comes in a 29er flavour too. I can get these through my local shop, so will order pronto. Thanks Perry - great find. Er....well...I assume you wrote this before the 16th minute of the 3rd period in today's game? Things kinda went south for the US gals after that. Oh man...feel so bad for the American team. Pretty heavy loss, after feeling they had the game sewn up. Tomorrow's game, on the other hand, doesn't look so promising for us. Most folks up here grudgingly admit that the US will probably take it. Should be another epic game, whatever the outcome. I know where I will be when the puck drops at noon tomorrow Workplace productivity in this country will be at an all-time low this week.

Svend
How do you like riding on the Kinetic indoor trainer and mountain bike combo? My dedicated bike trainer broke and I miss having that workout. I've considered a spin bike, but, don't like all the space requirements for something only used during winter months. I'm considering an indoor trainer to use with a road bike. Does the Kinetic have a means of increasing/decreasing the resistance so that a workout can be done at various levels of exertion?
