I assume that all of us have used the Motorola type multi-channel walkie talkies in the past, and sometimes we could actually reach the person we wanted to. Cell phone has replaced those for me, but Lynn and I have often wished that we could talk ad-hoc as we are biking or skiing, especially if we are out of sight of each other or if the person in front is wondering what is going on behind them. Sometimes if one of us is chatting with another rider it would be nice to be able to share that conversation.
On a century ride this summer I saw a couple on a tandem bike with wireless headsets. We chatted a bit and they were extremely enthusiastic (and pretty knowledgeable about the advantages of communicating on a well-ridden tandem setup). I received a pair as a birthday gift this year, and today was their first use.
1. They work very well. No need to push to talk, no delay, just talk normally. No wind noise.
2. They are full-deplex (different channels), so we can both be talking at the same time and both conversations get transmitted (just like normal conversation).
3. Range today wasn't 1/4 mile, maybe 100 yards (see the mfg link below) for their experience).
4. We are working on how/where to attach the headset to the ski helmet since the headset is designed for biking..
CONCLUSION: The communicators work every bit as well as the couple on the tandem bike said. It's just like talking to each other. When we were standing next to each other it was hard to tell whether we were hearing the voice direct or the headset speaker. Having the ability to talk to each other when we are out of sight, or when the person in front has no idea what may be going on behind them is very worthwhile. Being able to give some instant coaching as we watch the other ski is really an unexpected bonus. The next time we take video we won't have to communicate with hand signals, we'll just talk to each other!
