In one word: Damn, it's cold out here. Highs in the single digits and lows in the negative double digits for the past several days. The good news is that highs in the coming week are supposed to rebound up to the low 20's.
But the ground is covered with some amount of white stuff.

Yep, I only made it for about 2 hours today and decided there will be other days to slide down the white stuff. It wasn't nearly as oppressively cold yesterday.

I'm really glad to hear you say that. I was thinking that either I hadn't acclimated from east coast weather or that I was just becoming a wuss. I've skied at -5 on a sunny day and it didn't even seem that cold. In fact, we made ourelves go inside every 2-3 hours for a bit, just to make sure that there weren't unseen or unnoticed areas of concern. But today, at +5 it felt really cold. Cloudy and higher humidity makes it seem even colder (my phone was saying "feels like" of -15. First day on snow, we just just working on tipping and releasing, and there will certainly be less bone chilling days ahead. Lynn was also having a problem with one of her boot heaters, which accented the coldness, but I was chilly as well.
BTW, I'll post more in the gear section but we bought a set of full-duplex always-on radios (no push to talk stuff) for biking and skiing. This was their first day, and I was really pleased. We need to fiddle a little bit to get them more comfortable with ski helmets (that cover the ear, unlike bike helmets), but the sound through face coverings and helmet ear flaps and neck gaiters was quite good, no wind whistle.
An example. We went through a small section of easy trees off the side of the trail. As Lynn came out she asked me where I was. I was able to say that I had gone right and come out on the other side off the trees, meet her slightly farther down. So amazingly convenient to be able to talk to each other while going. We probably could not have yelled the same info to each other. Another more embarassing example. I was skiing ahead of her and was able to her her say, "Jim, counter with your body, not merely your head." (This is a problem that I fight constantly).

Going back to fundamentals has been good. Today I began to feel like I was finding my feet. Temps at the end of the day, -2* with windchill of -25. High for the day was 5. The cold spell breaks tomorrow with a high in the mid teens. Lynn and I will more likely feel like skiing more than 2-3 hours per day. But, after all, this is just early season warm up.

Beautiful weather today. Temps in the mid 20's, sunny sky, no wind. Best of all, Lynn says she is beginning to sees angles in my turns, both sides, as well as the uphill view of my bases. That is much better than her earlier advice to counter with more than just my head and neck.
Overall a lovely day at Keystone.

HA We had such a good day at Keystone today, we were planning to go again tomorrow. Would be great to meet up for a couple of runs together. We usually park at River Run and change at the Mountain House.
THoughts on best place to meet up? Lynn and Jim

I'm meeting the carving crew at 9 a.m. at Peru. I'll be booting up at the Mountain House probably around 8:00 a.m. and taking a warm up lap when Peru lift opens at 8:30 a.m. I have a bright orange jacket and gray pants.

We just saw this. Different schedules! We'll keep an eye out for a chance meeting. Sounds intimidating for the not-so-high-angled skiers here. Enjoy! Lyn and jim

HA: You're on the snow, we are still eating breakfast? I have powder blue jacket with gray pants; Lynn has purple jacket with mustard colored pants. We'll probably recognize your crew by the level of skiing; not so true of our skiing. Hope we meet up, I would really like to see some high end PMTS free skiing, even if from afar.
