Most of you have seen his amateur ski videos over the years…they get a lot of air time on the well-trodden ski forums. He just put up this one this weekend, featuring a lot of Spring skiing and off-piste powdery skiing. He and his brother (the ripping tele skier) represent, to my mind, the highest level of non-professional recreational enthusiast skiers. He's crazy versatile, he is as smooth a real-world zipper liner (both of them are) as I've ever seen, he can roll them over on the off-piste, he uses a lot of different ways to turn and the terrain he skis is expert, but again, 'real world' attainable (no Valdez backflips!). I like the stuff he has written on other forums regarding bump technique and such. I like that this one features some powder skiing and not just bumps and steeps. I'd take a bump lesson from him.

There's a lot to like about Blake's skiing. I would also take a mogul lesson from him anytime. However, I would like to see him tweak his on-piste and off-piste skiing a bit.

Yeah, I suppose you would, HA. But I think that only goes back to style preferences discussed at length last season (and perhaps with a touch of acrimony). Along with pointing to slightly acrimonious threads from last year, the one sequence of skiing a tight steep line, into a very tight rocky pinch zone and then into a wider line again is a fine demonstration of a blended approach to real world steeps. Others might ski that differently (I've seen the ski-porn guys 'air it out' or straight line it, haven't seen something like that 'skied' much differently, though. I'm sure it's possible, I just haven't seen it…anywhere).
But the mogul skiing (and the impressive, energetic tele skiing) is the real draw on this video. We see lots of folks posting their skiing, from TGR produced badassery to intermediate wedges, all fine in it's way. But, I'll stand by my assertion, Blake's videos are best non-professional, real-world expert skiing videos on the web. The fact that they blend hard-core, elegant zipper line moguls and the accessible off-piste is that greatest appeal. I'll tip my hat to the cats who can out high-angle carve him on the groomers, and the Big Mountain ski stars who outshine everyone. But no one without the last names Bloom or Deneen look smoother at speed in the bumps (and without the back flip kickers, I wonder how'd they stack up). The fact he can ski a different style in lots of different terrain as well is really impressive stuff.
