THis is a great video-short, but showcases the trees and steeze of western Massachusetts…and yes, it's a powder day. This was the first big storm of last season (Dec 28th 16 inches) which set off a really great season. The Skier with the Yellow Pants who shows up from time to time is a great young ripper and a third generation Berkshire East tree hound, and the guy who finally convinced me to get the Shamans. This is what we do at the B'East when it snows, and this you can find these lines all day! I know people laugh when I talk about powder skiing in MA, but it happens…quite a bit if you are willing to snake through the trees to find it! vimeo.com/56524765#comment_8481913

Liam,
While I've never been to b'east, your little mountain is one of my favorites, and, I'm committing to get there this season.
Those video's are such a tease! The odds of a typical eastern skier being present during such an event is so small. Last year on Gary's Holimont trip, we had 8 inches of powder at Holimont on a Monday with almost nobody at the mountain. Holimont has a lot of terrain, but, by 10:30 there was damn little powder to ski. That stuff goes quick. Good on you and your buds for being there in epic conditions.

LP, Please let me know when you come this way. Yeah, it's a special mountain. Early season (Christmas through MLK Day) Powder days get gobbled yup here as well, though, if you are willing to hit the trees--as in the above videos--you can find it much longer. By February, however, midweek powder (we'll say anything from 3 inches and above) lasts well into the afternoon. Saturdays and Sundays will see a gobbling like anywhere else. I only about 30 minutes from the hill, so if it snows I can table a lot of other obligations and get a few early hours in on most days. Not always, but more often than not I have been able to ski every snow day in the last 8 years..which adds up!
Yeah, every season isn't epic this far east and south, as we all know, but even in our worst seasons, I have been able to ski trees for a few weeks. And in our best seasons (last season was swell!) there are probably a good 10 weeks the Glades were open and skiing well. For these parts, that as good as we get!
However, at Berkshire east they have really amped up the snow making capacity again this season so on-piste conditions will rival the best in the east (they always do).
