OK Todd, how about referring to the current competition as FIFA World Cup? Since, this is a skiing forum, untitled "World Cup" shall henceforth be referring to FIS alpine skiing World Cup. The competition today was a little biting. No serious Tour talk yet. Just this little tickler: Hope Jens Voight is riding in the Tour this year. I have really enjoyed watching him over the past several years. Gives an old guy, like me, an old guy of the peloton to cheer for.

Well, since you went to the trouble of typing it all out ... you know why I want skiing to own the short WC name. And it's even longer when they stick Audi in the name.

Soccer's World Cup dates back to 1930, skiing's 1966. Meput, Why ruin a perfectly good internet discussion with data. All know that Todd, our Physicist, Educator, Researcher, is not easily swayed by such arguments, unless he's providing the data. Todd, You are far too knowledgeable about skiing World Cup victors to omit the great Bodemeister. Please don't tell us you don't like his technique. My argument for the premier World Cup belonging to soccer is based on the team achievement, plus, a far greater number of countries and fans involved. US vs Germany...of course, I will root for the US, but, no matter who wins, the sun will rise on Friday, and, we will be one day closer to ski season.

LP,
Y'know, I originally had a longer list with Bode Miller, Gustavo Thoeni, Phil Mahre, and others on it. It was just too long. Miller is actually an interesting character. I've had dinner with and skied with a coach who is best friends with Miller's cousin and good friends with Bode himself. Lots of interesting stories, including Bode's theory on boot alignment.
And don't misunderstand me. I am in awe of what the FIFA WC guys accomplish. But at the end of the day I'm just a grumpy skier hibernating through summer until the ice returns.

The heck with Group E & F Go USA! Just think if you were located in Colorado (or anywhere out west), you might be saying: I'm just a grumpy skier hibernating through summer until the SNOW returns.

What is Bode's theory on boot alignment, and what do you think of his thoughts. Jim

I think he's crazy. But then we already know that since he charges down steep slopes on DH skis at speeds where a wee tiny ripple in the surface can launch you for 100 meters and sometimes does this in the fog.
The second hand story is that he deliberately set his alignment off up to 1 degree either way so that different parts of his knee joint would wear as the seasons progressed rather than always wearing the same groove. I think this is just a cover story since I clearly saw Bode in the Men in Black movies.

Savor the upcoming German victory! Todd, good job on predicting the future. Any suggestions for investments in the stock market. How about numbers for the up coming power ball. Even more important, what is the outlook for snow this upcoming winter especially at the 'loaf, A-basin, Kmart, etc

Ya know, picking Germany over the United States doesn't make you the Wizard of Oz! Ughhh, on second thought maybe it does. But i have to admit the score (at least) was much closer than I expected.
My baseball analogy on technique. Some people are such tremendous athletic talents that they succeed with poor technique. I always hated to see kids try to mimic them. On the other hand, I always admired Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn for pretty fundamentally sound technique (as far as I could ascertain). Good role models for anyone.
